Equipment for the Office
Whether the artist is working from home or from a rented office space, to run a business, certain equipment is necessary. A computer and printer are the most obvious needs – is it even possible to run a business without a computer these days? – but, a well-equipped office will help the business run smoothly.
Start with the Basics
First thing the artist should do when setting up the office is evaluate the space. The work area should be adequate for the job you are doing. If space allows, a nice-sized desk or work table is a must. There should be room to spread out work. Find a desk chair that is comfortable and functional but also fits the space. A filing cabinet or filing drawers in the desk are also essential. Organization is the key to a good business, and a filing cabinet is the first step to good organization. Plus, a filing cabinet provides added counter space.
Electronics
As stated earlier, the computer and printer are obvious needs. The computer should be able to handle the needs of the business, but be smart about the purchase. It should have plenty of hard drive space and RAM, plus a reliable back-up system. An internet connection and a professional email address are necessary, as well.
When purchasing a printer, if economy (and space) is a concern, the all-in-one printers are a good choice. These printers are usually ink-jets with a printer, copier, scanner, and fax machine – all items that are an absolute must for any office.
A voice mail system is under-valued but absolutely essential for the arts business office, especially for those who work out of the home. A great way to take care of voice mail and a business phone is to purchase a cell phone.
While a shredder or a digital camera is not necessary, they are good to own at some point in time. A digital camera can add a new dimension to the services offered a client. A shredder is handy if sensitive work needs to be destroyed.
Finally, every office space should be well lit. Decorative lamps add a nice flair to any work area.
