The Importance of Networking
Networking is a valuable skill for any business person, but especially important for the creative professional. Creative endeavors can be a lonely pursuit, so it is good to find other professionals with whom to talk. Networking also introduces creative professionals to potential clients or to people who can provide leads to potential clients.
Professional Organizations and Internet Lists
Joining a professional organization is very important. The organization allows the creative professional to stay on top of the latest news within the business. Joining with groups that discuss the business is also a good idea. Creative professionals understand how difficult it is to find and maintain work, and depending on the type of business, there is not a lot of direct competition. Freelancing professionals are very helpful when it comes to sharing wisdom or sources or potential markets. In fact, these organizations and networking lists can introduce markets that the creative professional never knew existed.
Chamber of Commerce
The creative professional will want to consider joining the local Chamber of Commerce. There may be a fee for membership, but the opportunities it presents will make it worth the price. Chambers of Commerce often sponsor social gatherings, which are meant for networking. Here, the creative professional can meet members of the business community, learn about the needs of business people and how the creative professional’s services fit in to the community. Many Chambers of Commerce print a booklet listing their member companies and their services. This is easy advertising for the creative professional.
Friends and Social Gatherings
Never underestimate the power of friendships when networking. Encourage friends to introduce you to their friends. Brainstorm with them for potential clients. Good friends often act as word-of-mouth advertising.
Taking advantage of social gatherings is another good way to network. Creative professionals should consider attending picnics or celebrations sponsored by their place of worship, parties hosted by their spouse’s business associates, or community events. Joining social or civic organizations is another way to meet local people and network.
It pays to donate services, as well. Many organizations use silent auctions as a way of raising money. The creative professional could donate a specific service. A photographer could offer a family portrait or a dance studio could provide two lessons or tickets to a performance. A writer who offers to prepare an organization’s monthly newsletter might be writing for free, but it is a chance for others to see the quality of work. Getting your name and a sample of your work in the public eye will help generate a steady income.
